Riedburg Castle Ruins (Switzerland)

Weather…

The ruins of Riedburg Castle are hidden in a wooded area near Köniz in the Canton of Bern. Built in the 13th century by the Barons of Riedburg, who served the Zähringer and later the Savoyard dynasties, the castle was designed as a spur-type fortress. Its primary purpose was to protect local estates and control the Scherliau Valley. Unlike the larger fortresses in the region, Riedburg remained relatively small and lost its strategic importance as early as the 14th century when it fell under the influence of the city of Bern. During the Laupen War in 1339, the castle was partially destroyed and was never fully rebuilt afterward. Today, mainly the remnants of the keep and the surrounding walls are visible, having been largely reclaimed by nature. The site serves as a valuable example of minor noble architecture in the Bernese Mittelland.
