Ostermundigen is located directly east of the city of Bern and is one of the largest municipalities in the federal capital's agglomeration. The history of the community is inextricably linked to the local sandstone quarries. Since the Middle Ages, high-quality Bernese sandstone has been quarried here, used for the construction of numerous monumental buildings in Bern, including Bern Minster, the Federal Palace, and the entire Old Town of Bern. The now-disused quarries shape the landscape and serve as protected natural zones as well as venues for cultural performances. Geographically, Ostermundigen is bordered to the north by the Schosshalden forest and to the east by the Ostermundigenberg, which serves as a vital local recreation area. During the 20th century, the town underwent a rapid transformation from a rural settlement into a modern residential and service center. Economically, Ostermundigen benefited from excellent connections to the rail network and motorways. The municipality is home to numerous small and medium-sized enterprises as well as headquarters of regional organizations. Culturally, Ostermundigen has gained international fame as the birthplace of Ursula Andress, the very first 'Bond Girl'. Today, the town administration places a strong focus on urban renewal, particularly around the railway station, to further enhance the quality of life. Despite its close integration with Bern, Ostermundigen maintains an independent political identity and a bustling community life that strengthens social cohesion among its diverse population.
