💡 Tips

  • The Roman mosaics of Boscéaz are a major highlight; aim to arrive first thing in the morning to admire the intricate artwork without the crowds.
  • The historic old town sits atop a hill. Be prepared for steep, cobbled alleyways and make sure to wear sensible, slip-resistant shoes.
  • On hot summer days, taking a hike through the cool, damp pathways of the Orbe Gorge (Gorges de l'Orbe) is incredibly refreshing.
  • Parking in the upper historical town is notoriously tricky. Use the designated parking areas at the bottom of the hill near the river instead.
  • Local bakeries and small independent shops often still observe a traditional lunch closure, so buy your picnic supplies mid-morning.

Orbe is a historic town in the canton of Vaud, situated on a prominent rocky plateau overlooking the river of the same name. The settlement dates back to Roman times when it was known as Urba, serving as a vital link on the transport axis between the Great St. Bernard Pass and Gaul. Today, the town is world-renowned for the Roman mosaics of Boscéaz, which belonged to one of the largest and most luxurious Roman villas in Switzerland from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. During the Middle Ages, Orbe developed into a significant fortified center under Burgundian and later Savoyard rule. The striking round castle tower from the 13th century remains a visible testament to its medieval importance. The townscape is also characterized by the late Gothic Church of Notre-Dame, rebuilt after a major fire in 1407. Modern Orbe serves as a regional economic hub, notably influenced by the food industry and the surrounding vineyards. It successfully maintains its ancient heritage while providing modern infrastructure and high quality of life at the foot of the Jura mountains.
