Chapel Bridge (Switzerland)

Weather…

The Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) in Lucerne is the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe and serves as the definitive landmark of the city. Built around 1333 as part of the city's coastal fortifications, it crosses the Reuss River at an angle to connect the Old Town with the New Town. A defining feature of the bridge is the series of 111 triangular interior paintings dating back to the 17th century, which depict significant events from Swiss history and the lives of Lucerne's patron saints. Situated at the center of the bridge is the 34-meter-tall octagonal Water Tower (Wasserturm), which predates the bridge itself and has functioned as an archive, treasury, prison, and torture chamber over the centuries. In August 1993, a catastrophic fire destroyed a large portion of the bridge, but it was meticulously reconstructed and reopened within eight months. Today, it stands as one of Switzerland's most iconic and photographed structures, embodying the medieval heritage and resilience of the region.
