Castels Castle Ruins (Switzerland)

Weather…

The Castels Castle ruins tower on a prominent rocky ridge near Luzein in the Prättigau valley and are considered one of the most significant historical fortifications in the Canton of Graubünden. First documented in writing in the 12th century, it served for centuries as the administrative center and judicial seat for the Lordship of Castels, which was at times under the influence of the Barons of Vaz and later the Austrians. The extensive complex included an upper and a lower castle, protected by strong curtain walls and strategically controlling access to the upper Prättigau. During the 'Bündner Wirren' conflicts in the 17th century, the castle became the scene of fierce fighting between local partisans and Austrian troops. Following the expulsion of the Austrians in 1649, the fortress was demolished by the people of Prättigau themselves to prevent its further use as a stronghold of oppression. The ruins visible today were archaeologically explored and conserved in the 20th century to preserve the site's monumental significance for the region's freedom.
