Burgdorf is located in the canton of Bern on the Emme river and is dominated by its imposing castle, which perches on a prominent sandstone rock above the town. Burgdorf Castle is considered one of the best-preserved Zähringer complexes in Switzerland and today houses a versatile museum as well as a modern youth hostel. The historic old town is divided into an upper town and a lower town, connected by numerous pretty stairs and alleys. The town gained worldwide fame through the educator Heinrich Pestalozzi, who developed his groundbreaking teaching method here around 1800 and ran a model school in the castle. Economically, Burgdorf functions as a regional center for the Emmental, but it is also home to specialized industrial companies in medical technology and construction. The Bern University of Applied Sciences for Architecture, Wood, and Civil Engineering gives the town a lively character as an educational site. Culturally, the Museum Franz Gertsch stands out, displaying internationally significant works by the eponymous artist in a modern architectural setting. The surroundings offer gentle hilly landscapes typical of the Bernese Mittelland, inviting for long bike tours and hikes. Burgdorf proudly maintains its traditions, such as the annual Solennität, a school festival with a centuries-old history that demonstrates the deep roots of the residents with their town.
