Arth is situated on the southern shore of the easy on the eye Lake Zug in the canton of Schwyz. The town is part of the municipality of Arth, which also includes the well-known village of Goldau. This location makes it a convenient starting point for excursions into the mountains and onto the lake. Arth is particularly famous for being one of the main access points to Mount Rigi, the "Queen of the Mountains". The historic Arth-Rigi railway, a cogwheel train, once took passengers from Arth to the summit but was later replaced by the railway from Goldau. The area is also marked by the history of the 1806 Goldau landslide, one of Switzerland's worst-ever natural disasters. Today, the area is home to a nature and animal park. Visitors can enjoy water sports on Lake Zug, hike in the surrounding mountains, or simply take in the panoramic scenery. Local gastronomy features Swiss specialities, with the region being known for its cherries and the Kirsch (cherry brandy) made from them. Arth is easily accessible from cities like Zurich and Lucerne. Arth is a year-round destination.
