Rueti is a municipality in the Hinwil district of the Canton of Zurich, located on the edge of the Zurich Highlands near the border with the Canton of St. Gallen. The town's history is inextricably linked to the Rueti Abbey, founded in 1206 by the Barons of Regensberg. During the Middle Ages, the Premonstratensian Abbey was one of the region's most influential religious institutions and served as the burial site for the Counts of Toggenburg. Following the Reformation, the abbey was dissolved, yet the abbey church and parts of the buildings have survived to this day, forming the town's historical core. In the 19th century, Rueti underwent a radical transformation due to industrialization. The hydraulic power of the Jona river was harnessed to power numerous textile mills and machinery factories, turning Rueti into a major industrial center. Today, the town is a modern residential and economic hub with excellent infrastructure. It features a major railway station that serves as a key transfer point for S-Bahn lines connecting to Zurich, Rapperswil, and the Toess Valley. The surrounding area of Rueti has beautiful recreational spots like the Bachtel mountain, where an observation tower provides panoramic views of the Alps and Lake Zurich. Culturally, Rueti is defined by diverse events and an active club life that bridges its historic heritage with contemporary urban living.
