Alt-Rapperswil

Alt-Rapperswil is a historic ruined castle site located in the municipality of Altendorf, near Lachen, overlooking the picturesque upper reaches of Lake Zurich in Switzerland. This medieval fortress served as the original ancestral seat of the influential Lords of Rapperswil before they moved their primary residence across the lake to establish the present-day town of Rapperswil. The origins of the site date back to the 11th century, representing a significant center of regional noble power during the High Middle Ages.

The fortress was strategically positioned to control important trade routes and local waterways. Over time, as the family's power grew, the old castle lost its primary importance and eventually fell into ruin, especially following the destruction during regional conflicts and the Old Zürich War.
