💡 Tips
- Take the gondola up from Kandersteg early in the morning to avoid the crowds and get the best light for photos. The path from the top station to the lake is an easy 20-minute walk.
- Don't just stay on the shore; rent a rowboat to experience the waterfalls and sheer cliffs from the water. The water is freezing, but a quick dip is very refreshing on a hot day.
- Save money by bringing your own picnic. There are many beautiful spots around the lake to enjoy local specialties bought from the shops in Kandersteg.
- For a spectacular view, hike the Heuberg panoramic trail. This path takes you high above the lake, offering panoramic views of the lake and surrounding peaks.
🍽 Food
Enjoy an authentic cheese fondue at one of the mountain restaurants overlooking the lake. It's a great, warming meal after a hike.
Try this traditional Swiss potato dish, often served with a fried egg on top. It's a hearty specialty available at the local mountain inns.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Buy local alpine cheese in the specialty shops in Kandersteg. It's an authentic souvenir and a taste of the region.
Look for hand-carved wooden figures and souvenirs in Kandersteg, a traditional craft of the region.
Hike to the rear of the lake. Most visitors stay near the boat rental area, so this area is much quieter and has a different perspective.
Take the path towards the Oberbärgli hut. Even just the first few hundred metres will leave the crowds behind and immerse you in the silence of the alpine meadows.
Water temperature…
Oeschinen Lake is widely regarded as one of Switzerland's most beautiful mountain lakes, situated at 1578m at the foot of the Blüemlisalp massif. Its turquoise water is fed by glacial streams from the surrounding 3000m peaks. From the Kandersteg gondola summit station, a pleasant 20-minute walk leads to the shore, with an electric shuttle available during summer. The area has numerous trails, such as the spectacular high trail to the Heuberg viewpoint. Rowing boats can be rented on the lake, and a summer toboggan run near the gondola station provides extra thrills. In winter, the lake often freezes solid enough for ice fishing or skating. Local mountain guesthouses by the lake serve traditional cheese fondue and homemade fruit tarts. The best time to visit is early summer for the alpine rose blooms or September for stable hiking weather.
