Zollikofen is located north of the city of Bern on a plateau between the Aare valley and the Grauholz. The community has developed from a farming village into an ultra-modern administrative and educational center. Historically, the place was first mentioned in 1257. Today, large building complexes characterize the townscape, housing various federal offices, such as the Federal Office of Information Technology, Systems and Telecommunication. The educational location is also of supra-regional importance, with institutions such as the School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences (HAFL). Geographically, Zollikofen has attractive green spaces despite the intensive use, such as the Grauholz local recreation area, which also has historical significance through the Battle of Grauholz in 1798. The connection to public transport is excellent through several stations of the Bern S-Bahn and the Regionalverkehr Bern-Solothurn. Economically, the service sector and public administration dominate. The architecture is functional and modern, with some historical substance still preserved in the old parts of the village. Zollikofen provides a high quality of life through the combination of urban infrastructure and direct access to nature.
