Hjo is one of Sweden's three historic wooden towns, situated on the western shore of Lake Vättern in Västra Götaland County. The town was granted city rights in 1413 and has remarkably preserved its medieval street layout along with numerous wooden structures from the 18th and 19th centuries. A key landmark is the Hjo City Park, established in the late 19th century as part of a local hydropathic spa, and now famous for its ornate wooden villas. The S/S Trafik, one of Sweden's oldest steam-powered passenger vessels, still operates scheduled tours from the harbor across the lake. In recognition of its exemplary preservation of historical urban heritage, Hjo was awarded the Europa Nostra medal in 1990. The town maintains a serene maritime atmosphere and serves as a cultural and tourism hub for the Guldkroken region. Hjo Church, rebuilt following a fire in 1794, remains a significant religious and architectural landmark.
