Skövde is located in the historic province of Västergötland, tucked away between Sweden's two largest lakes, Vänern and Vättern. The city has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages when it was a significant religious center and the pilgrimage site for Saint Elin. A devastating fire in 1759 destroyed almost the entire city core, leading to its reconstruction according to a modern urban plan. With the arrival of the Stockholm-Gothenburg railway line in the 19th century, rapid industrialization began, fundamentally changing the town's character. Today, Skövde is primarily known for its strong military presence as one of Sweden's largest garrison towns, as well as its significant automotive industry. The University of Skövde has emerged as a leading center for information technology and computer game design. The nearby Billingen table mountain provides diverse recreational opportunities and highlights the scenic attractiveness of the region for both residents and visitors.
