Uddevalla is situated at the end of the Byfjord on Sweden's west coast in the province of Bohuslän. The city's history was defined for centuries by border conflicts between Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, leading to several changes in nationality. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Uddevalla profited immensely from the herring export trade, which transformed it into a wealthy commercial center. Following multiple devastating fires, the town was modernly rebuilt during the 19th century. In the 20th century, Uddevalla gained fame for its shipyard, Uddevallavarvet, which was once one of the region's largest employers. Cultural highlights include the Bohusläns Museum, which documents the coastal region's history and culture. Nearby, the famous shell banks of Kuröd can be found, which are among the largest of their kind in the world. Today, Uddevalla serves as a vital transportation hub and service center, characterized by its waterfront location and proximity to nature.
