Weather…

Lake Tåkern, located in the province of Östergötland, is widely regarded as one of Northern Europe's premier bird lakes. With an average depth of just 0.8 meters and a maximum of 2 meters, it is an exceptionally shallow lake surrounded by one of the region's largest continuous reed beds. This unique environment provides optimal breeding conditions for roughly 100 different bird species. The lake's current state is largely the result of an artificial water level lowering in the 19th century, which facilitated the expansion of its vast reed ecosystems. Today, the entire lake is a designated Ramsar site and a protected nature reserve. The Naturum Tåkern visitor center, an award-winning architectural structure with a reed-thatched roof, provides interactive exhibits and panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. The area is particularly noted for its populations of Eurasian bitterns, bearded reedlings, and marsh harriers, as well as the tens of thousands of greylag geese that gather here during the autumn migration.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Lake Tåkern is best accessed via the Naturum Tåkern visitor center at Glanås, which is clearly signposted. Most visitors arrive by car from the E4 highway or from the nearby historic town of Vadstena.
📅
Best season
Spring and autumn are the peak times to witness the massive bird migration activity within the extensive reed beds. Summer features many rare blooming plants, while winter has wide, frosty lake views.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain around the lake is flat, consisting mostly of wet meadows and dense reed beds. Many bird-watching points are accessible via well-maintained, accessible wooden boardwalks and level paths.
🎒
What to bring
Be sure to bring binoculars for bird watching. As the terrain is very exposed, windproof and waterproof clothing is recommended, along with water-resistant footwear for the often damp trail sections.
🅿️
Parking
Ample free parking is available at the Naturum Tåkern visitor center for all guests. Smaller parking areas can also be found at other observation towers around the lake, though these are more limited.
⚠️
Safety
Stay on the boardwalks and marked trails to avoid disturbing the sensitive nesting birds. Wooden planks can be slippery when wet, and visitors should be prepared for insects like mosquitoes in summer.
⏱️
Time needed
A visit to the visitor center and a walk to the nearest observation tower typically takes two to three hours. Bird enthusiasts often spend an entire day exploring various spots around the lakeshore.
