Alvastra Hills (Sweden)

Weather…

The Alvastra Hills, better known as part of the Omberg massif, rise prominently on the eastern shore of Lake Vättern in the province of Östergötland. Geologically, this area is a horst, a block of land raised between faults, providing spectacular views over Sweden deepest lake. The hills are deeply intertwined with Swedish history, most notably through Alvastra Abbey, founded in 1143 as the country first Cistercian monastery. The ruins of the abbey lie at the foot of the elevations, bearing witness to the medieval significance of this religious center. The nature of the hills is characterized by an unusually diverse deciduous forest, home to many rare plant and insect species. The area has been protected as an Ecopark since 2003, ensuring the preservation of both biological diversity and cultural heritage. Hiking trails lead through deep gorges and along steep cliffs, offering expansive views of the vast Östergötland plains.
