Jebel Marra (Sudan)

Weather…

Jebel Marra is a massive volcanic mountain range located in the center of the Darfur region of western Sudan, representing the country's highest elevation. The range covers an area of approximately 1,500 square kilometers and is dominated by the Deriba Crater, a giant caldera with a 5-kilometer diameter that houses two crater lakes. Due to its altitude, Jebel Marra enjoys a temperate climate with significantly higher precipitation rates than the surrounding lowlands, making it an ecological island amidst the desert. These climatic conditions enable unique flora, including Mediterranean plant species and dense forests, as well as the cultivation of cereals and fruit. Geologically, the complex is part of a volcanic province active millions of years ago, with the last eruptions occurring only a few thousand years ago. The mountains serve as a vital watershed, with streams and springs ensuring the survival of millions in the region. Despite its natural beauty, access to the area has remained restricted due to political conflicts over recent decades.
