Sanganeb is the only true atoll in the Red Sea and a world-class paradise for divers. The reef rises steeply from depths of over 800 meters, hosting an incredible variety of corals and marine life. Since 2016, the Sanganeb Marine National Park, together with Dungonab Bay, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site, underscoring its immense ecological importance. The most prominent feature of Sanganeb is the 50-meter-high British-built lighthouse, constructed in the early 20th century. Visitors can climb the stairs to the top and are rewarded with a dramatic 360-degree view of the turquoise lagoon and the deep blue open sea. The inner lagoon provides shelter for dolphins, while the outer reef edges are frequent haunts for sharks, barracudas, and manta rays. Reaching the atoll takes about one to two hours by boat from Port Sudan. As there are no hotels on the atoll, most divers visit Sanganeb as part of liveaboard safaris or day trips. A small garrison of lighthouse keepers lives there, and they are often happy to share stories about life in such a remote location. The best time for spotting large pelagic fish is during late spring. Sanganeb is a place of absolute peace and untouched nature. There is no noise, no internet, and no artificial light. Those who travel here seek a connection with the ocean in its purest form. Diving the north and south plateaus of the reef is widely considered among the best experiences in the world for advanced scuba enthusiasts.
