Minneriya National Park (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Minneriya National Park, located in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka, is globally renowned for the spectacular wildlife phenomenon known as 'The Gathering'. During the dry season from August to September, hundreds of Asian elephants congregate on the shores of the Minneriya Tank to feed on fresh grass and access water. The tank itself is an ancient engineering marvel, commissioned by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD, and it remains a vital irrigation source for the region today. Established as a national park in 1997, the area spans approximately 89 square kilometers and features a diverse ecosystem of evergreen forests and wetlands. Beyond its elephants, Minneriya is a key habitat for two endemic monkeys, the purple-faced langur and the toque macaque, as well as numerous crocodiles and water birds. The vegetation is characterized by dense bamboo groves and vast grasslands that expand or contract based on the reservoir's water levels. The park serves as a critical link in the elephant migration corridor connecting Kaudulla and Wasgamuwa National Parks. Minneriya is considered one of the best places on Earth to study the social dynamics of large elephant herds in their natural environment.
