Nainativu
Nainativu, also known as Nagadeepa, is a small island located off the Jaffna Peninsula that holds immense spiritual significance for Sri Lankans. It is a rare site where major Buddhist and Hindu shrines coexist in close proximity, making it a symbol of religious harmony. Pilgrims and tourists alike visit the island to experience its sacred atmosphere and witness the animated rituals that take place daily. The Nagadeepa Purana Viharaya is a prominent Buddhist temple, believed to be the site where the Buddha arrived during his second visit to Sri Lanka to settle a dispute. Its silver stupa stands as a beacon for arriving boats. Nearby sits the remarkable Naga Pooshani Amman Temple, a Hindu complex dedicated to Parvati, featuring intricately carved and colorful gopurams that dominate the island's skyline. The sound of temple bells and the sight of devotees performing rituals create a powerful sensory experience. Reaching Nainativu involves a scenic boat ride from the Kurikadduwan jetty. As a major religious site, visitors are expected to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees. The best time to visit is during the dry season from January to September, though attending during the Hindu festival in June or July has a unique opportunity to witness spectacular traditional processions and ceremonies.
