Manresa is located at the geographical heart of Catalonia and serves as the capital of the Bages region. The city possesses a rich history spanning from Roman times through the Middle Ages to the Industrial Revolution. Its architectural jewel is the Basilica of Santa Maria de la Seu, a 14th-century masterpiece of Catalan Gothic design that dominates the skyline from its hilltop position. Manresa is globally famous as the site where Saint Ignatius of Loyola spent eleven months in 1522 and composed his 'Spiritual Exercises'; the Cave of Saint Ignatius remains a major pilgrimage site today. Geographically, the city sits near the confluence of the Cardener and Llobregat rivers, which facilitated a thriving textile industry during the 19th century. Today, Manresa is a dynamic service and cultural center, featuring well-preserved modernist architecture throughout its urban core.
