Castellón de la Plana, tucked away between rolling hills and the sunny Costa del Azahar, is a characterful and often underestimated city on the Mediterranean coast. Its economic boom was long based on the traditional ceramics and tile industry, in which the surrounding province is a global leader; the artistic products of this craft decorate squares and building facades throughout the cityscape. The historic heart of the city around the Plaza Mayor features the unusually separate arrangement of the Santa María Cathedral, the city hall, and the distinctive octagonal bell tower, El Fadrí, which is considered the undisputed symbol of Castellón. Just outside the center lies the maritime district of El Grao, where fishing boats, excellent seafood restaurants, and wide sandy beaches great the Mediterranean lifestyle.
