Cardona
Cardona is a historical gem in the heart of Catalonia, owing its past strategic importance and wealth to its impregnable fortress and its 'white gold', salt. The Castle of Cardona, dating back to the 9th century, sits majestically atop a hill and is considered one of Spain's most important medieval fortresses. Inside its walls lies the Church of Sant Vicenç, a masterpiece of Catalan Romanesque architecture. Today, part of the castle serves as a Parador hotel, allowing visitors to stay in a truly royal setting. The town's other major draw is the Salt Mountain Cultural Park (Parc Cultural de la Muntanya de Sal). This rare geological phenomenon consists of a massive salt plug pushing through the Earth's surface. Visitors can take a guided tour deep into the old mine shafts to marvel at the striking stalactites and stalagmites made entirely of salt. Mining here dates back to Roman times and only ceased in the late 20th century. The historic center of Cardona itself is a maze of narrow streets and medieval squares, perfectly preserved in time. Located about 90 kilometers inland from Barcelona, Cardona is an excellent destination for a day trip or a quiet weekend getaway. The castle walls offer sweeping views of the Cardener river valley and the surrounding hills. It is a place where military history, religious art, and industrial heritage converge. Visiting in late summer allows you to experience the local 'Festa Major,' but the town's timeless atmosphere makes it a compelling visit at any time of year.
