💡 Tips
- To avoid the long queues for the Black Madonna, visit the basilica either early in the morning right after it opens, or late in the afternoon.
- Wear sturdy footwear. Even if you don't plan on hiking, the terrain around the monastery is steep and uneven.
- Check the schedule of the L'Escolania boys' choir in advance if you want to catch their world-famous performance. They perform most days, but not always.
- Take the rack railway (Cremallera) or the cable car (Aeri) for a spectacular arrival. The Aeri ride is shorter and steeper. Buy tickets online in advance to avoid queues.
- From the monastery, the Sant Joan and Santa Cova funiculars can take you further up to panoramic viewpoints and hiking trails.
🍽 Food
Try this fresh, soft cheese often served with local honey and nuts. It's a typical dessert from the region you can find at the farmers' market near the monastery.
A flat, crunchy, and sugared type of bread. It's light and easy to eat while exploring the area. Buy it from the stalls near the car park.
An herbal liqueur made by the monks from a secret recipe. A unique souvenir sold at the monastery's gift shop.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Just outside the monastery, you'll find stalls where local producers sell cheese (like Mató), honey, figs, and other regional products.
The official shop has a wide selection of religious items, books, and products made by the monks, such as the famous 'Aromas de Montserrat' liqueur.
Escape the crowds by exploring one of the many hiking trails that lead from the monastery. The path to the Sant Jeroni hermitage provides the best views.
Take the funicular down and walk the gentle path to the Santa Cova chapel, where the Black Madonna was said to be found. It is quieter than the main monastery area.
An easy, shaded walk with benches and beautiful views towards the Pyrenees on a clear day, well-suited for a moment of contemplation.

Montserrat is more than just a mountain; it is the spiritual heart of Catalonia. Located about 50 kilometers northwest of Barcelona, this massive rock formation is famous for its unique, rounded peaks that resemble giant fingers pointing to the sky. Set high in these cliffs is the Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat. Founded in the 11th century, the monastery remains a major pilgrimage site, primarily due to 'La Moreneta' (the Black Madonna), a 12th-century Romanesque wooden statue of the Virgin Mary. In addition to its religious significance, Montserrat is a paradise for hikers and rock climbers. Numerous well-marked trails lead to hidden hermitages and spectacular viewpoints, such as Sant Jeroni, the highest point at 1,236 meters. On clear days, the view stretches from the Pyrenees to the island of Mallorca. A cultural highlight is the daily performance by the 'Escolania,' one of Europe's oldest boys' choirs, in the basilica. The monastery museum also houses an impressive collection of art, featuring works by Picasso, Dalí, and El Greco. Getting to Montserrat from Barcelona is part of the experience, involving a train ride followed by either the rack railway (Cremallera) or a cable car (Aeri). Since it is one of the region's most popular destinations, arriving early is recommended to enjoy the serene mountain air and the sacred atmosphere of the monastery. It is a year-round destination, but the soft light of autumn is particularly beautiful for photography and outdoor activities.
