Monastery of Montserrat (Spain)

Weather…

The Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat sits spectacularly at an altitude of 720 meters among the jagged, unique rock formations of the Montserrat mountains in Catalonia. The origins of the abbey, which is one of Spain's most important pilgrimage sites, date back to 1025. The spiritual heart of the monastery is the Black Madonna, known affectionately as 'La Moreneta,' a 12th-century Romanesque wooden statue and the patron saint of Catalonia, drawing countless pilgrims. The monastery is also home to the Escolania de Montserrat, one of the oldest boys' choirs in Europe, whose crystal-clear voices ring out daily in the basilica. In addition to its religious significance, the monastery has an outstanding art museum featuring works by El Greco, Caravaggio, Picasso, and Dalí. The unique combination of deep spirituality, cultural wealth, and wide-open natural scenery makes Montserrat a truly magical place.
