Almodovar del Rio Castle (Spain)

Weather…

The Castle of Almodóvar del Río, perched on a strategic hill overlooking the Guadalquivir valley in the province of Córdoba, is one of Spain's best-preserved medieval fortresses. Its origins date back to the Berber period around 760, but it owes its current imposing form to extensive reconstructions in the 14th century during the reign of Peter I the Cruel. The castle stands out for its nine towers, including the massive Keep (Hommage Tower) and the octagonal tower, offering sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. At the beginning of the 20th century, the fortress underwent a comprehensive and detailed restoration led by the Count of Torralva, a project that lasted nearly 36 years. Inside, visitors can explore the dungeons, armories, and grand halls that provide a vivid representation of medieval life. More recently, the castle gained international fame as a filming location for the series Game of Thrones, where it served as the seat of House Tyrell.
