Medina Azahara (Spain)

Weather…

The extensive ruins of Medina Azahara, located at the foot of the Sierra Morena mountains near Córdoba, bear witness to the former splendor of the 10th-century Umayyad palace-city. The first Caliph of Córdoba, Abd ar-Rahman III, ordered the construction of this highly representative complex starting in 936 AD to boldly demonstrate his empire's newly declared political and religious independence from the rival Fatimids in North Africa. Built on a series of descending terraces, the city covered approximately 112 hectares and included luxurious residential quarters, expansive ornamental gardens, military installations, and magnificent reception halls such as the renowned Salón Rico. This particular hall served as the caliph's throne room and deeply impressed foreign emissaries with its red and white marble horseshoe arches, intricately carved capitals, and a large reflecting pool in the front courtyard. Despite its immeasurable wealth, the city's fate was remarkably short-lived, as it was thoroughly sacked, destroyed, and abandoned to history just 74 years after its foundation during the chaos of civil war.
