Roquetas de Mar is located in the southeast of the Almería province and has transformed over recent decades from a small fishing village into one of the region's primary economic engines. Geographically, the municipality extends across a flat coastal plain bordered by the Puntas Entinas-Sabinar natural reserve, a vital ecosystem of dunes and wetlands. Historically, the Castillo de Santa Ana is of central importance; this 16th and 17th-century fortress once protected the coast from pirate raids and now functions as a cultural center. Roquetas' economy stands on two major pillars: intensive greenhouse agriculture (the 'Sea of Plastic') that supplies vegetables to much of Europe, and a highly developed tourism sector. With a population exceeding 100,000, it is one of the fastest-growing cities in Andalusia. In addition to its extensive beaches, the city features modern attractions such as a large aquarium and a water park.
