Peñíscola is often referred to as the "Gibraltar of Valencia" due to its spectacular geographical setting. The historic old town was built on a 64-meter-high rocky peninsula connected to the mainland only by a narrow strip of sand. This rocky outcrop is crowned by the Castillo de Papa Luna, a fortress originally built by the Knights Templar. In the early 15th century, it served as the residence and exiled papal seat of Antipope Benedict XIII (Pedro de Luna). The narrow, cobbled streets of the old town are lined with whitewashed houses and blue shutters. This striking ensemble of fortress walls and the sea has served as a backdrop for major film productions, notably portraying the fictional city of Meereen in the series Game of Thrones. Just south of the town begins the Sierra de Irta Natural Park, an undeveloped stretch of coastline featuring small coves and trails that provide a stark contrast to the busy northern beaches.
