💡 Tips

  • Book the ferry to Tabarca Island online as it's often cheaper than at the port. Choose a glass-bottom boat for a view of the marine life.
  • The best time to see the flamingos in the salt flats (Salinas) is during the early morning or late afternoon.
  • The Saturday market is larger and has more food produce than the Monday market. Arrive early to find a parking spot.
  • Buy freshly caught fish in the late afternoon directly from the fishermen's stalls at the fish exchange (Lonja) in the port.
  • Visit the Salt Museum (Museo de la Sal) to understand the history of salt production, but check its opening times as it often closes early.

🍽 Food

🍽
Arroz a Banda

A traditional rice dish where the rice is cooked in fish broth and served separately from the fish. A classic in the seaside restaurants.

🍽
Quisquilla de Santa Pola

The prized local pink shrimp. Best enjoyed simply boiled or grilled to appreciate their sweet flavour. Ask for them at any seafood restaurant.

🍽
Peix de Santa Pola

Not a dish, but a mark of origin for fish caught by the local fleet. Look for this label in restaurants as a guarantee of freshness.

Santa Pola is an animated coastal town south of Alicante, with history stretching back to Roman times as 'Portus Illicitanus'. One of its most impressive structures is the Castillo-Fortaleza in the town center, a 16th-century fortress built to defend against pirate attacks, which now houses the Maritime and Fishing Museum. The port is one of the most active on the entire Spanish Mediterranean coast, and the daily fish auction is a unique spectacle for visitors. To the west lies the Salinas de Santa Pola Natural Park, a vast area of salt flats and wetlands. It is a haven for birdwatchers, as large colonies of flamingos and storks live here year-round. The town has diverse beaches, from the wide sandy stretches in the south to the windy capes in the east, which are popular with kitesurfers and paragliders. A must-do is the boat trip to Tabarca Island, the only inhabited island in the Valencia region. Fast boats called 'Tabarqueras' take visitors in just 15-20 minutes to the island, famous for its clear waters and Spain's first marine reserve. Santa Pola is also a hub for sea salt production and is renowned for its excellent gastronomy, particularly its 'Peix de Santa Pola' fish specialties.
