Jávea, or Xàbia in the local language, is a town of three faces: the historic inland old town, the fishing port at the foot of the cliffs, and the tourist center of Playa del Arenal. The old town is centered around the Church of San Bartolomé, an impressive example of a fortress-church in the Isabelline Gothic style, built to defend against pirate raids. The port area retains its traditional atmosphere and houses the modern Church of Nuestra Señora de Loreto, featuring a ceiling shaped like a ship's hull. Jávea is famous for its diverse coastline, ranging from fine sandy beaches to rugged cliffs and sea caves. Montgó Mountain, which resembles a sleeping elephant, dominates the landscape and separates Jávea from Dénia. It is a protected natural park home to unique Mediterranean flora and fauna.
