Crocodile Bridge Gate is the most south-easterly entrance to the Kruger National Park in South Africa, situated directly on the banks of the Crocodile River near the border with Mozambique. The gate derives its name from the high density of crocodiles and hippos often visible from the bridge crossing the river. The region surrounding Crocodile Bridge is known as the 'Southern Basalts' area, which attracts a high concentration of grazing animals such as zebras, wildebeests, and impalas due to nutrient-rich soils. This abundance of prey in turn attracts large numbers of predators, making the area famous for regular lion and leopard sightings. The gate facility includes a rest camp with accommodation, a small shop, and refueling services. Its location in the Mpumalanga province makes it a well-suited starting point for visitors traveling from the direction of Komatipoort. Historically, the river serves as a significant geographical boundary and a vital life source for the park's entire ecosystem. Best season
The dry winter months (May to October) provide the best game viewing as animals gather near water sources. Summer rains (November to April) bring lush vegetation, making animals harder to spot; however, birding is excellent in summer.
Best time of day
Early morning drives at gate opening (around 6 am) are most productive for seeing predators and active grazers. Late afternoon until gate closing also yields excellent sightings; midday heat drives many animals to shade.
Etiquette
Stay inside your vehicle at all times except at designated rest camps. Do not get out of the car for photos or to approach animals; maintain safe distance from wildlife and do not feed them.
What to bring
A reliable vehicle with high clearance is important for gravel roads. Bring binoculars, a camera with telephoto lens, and plenty of water; sunscreen and hat for open-vehicle drives are advisable.
Getting there
Crocodile Bridge Gate is on the southern border of Kruger, accessible via the N4 highway from Nelspruit or Komatipoort. The gate is close to the border with Mozambique; park entry fees must be paid at the gate, reservations recommended.
