Secunda is a city in Mpumalanga, South Africa, established in the 1970s to support the Sasol coal-to-liquids project. The city's economy is dominated by the petrochemical industry, particularly the massive Sasol Secunda plant, one of the world's largest coal-to-liquids facilities. The population was about 40,000 in the 2011 census, though this number undercounts workers in temporary housing. The name Secunda is Latin for 'the second,' referring to it being Sasol's second plant after Sasolburg. The city is planned with distinct industrial and residential zones, wide roads, and green belts. Environmental concerns include high levels of air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, partly mitigated by carbon capture research.
