Ressano Garcia is a strategic border town in the Maputo Province, located in the extreme southwest of Mozambique, directly on the frontier with South Africa. It functions as the nation's most critical land border crossing and is a central element of the Maputo Development Corridor. The town's history is inextricably linked to the construction of the railway line in the late 19th century, which connects the Port of Maputo with the mining hubs of Johannesburg and Pretoria. Today, Ressano Garcia is an important industrial site, notably hosting the Gigawatt gas-fired power plant, which utilizes the country's abundant natural gas reserves. The town experiences high volumes of heavy truck traffic transporting essential goods between the two neighboring countries. Geographically, it is situated in a hilly terrain along the Incomati River. Infrastructure has been extensively upgraded in recent years to streamline border formalities and enhance regional economic integration. Despite its industrial nature, the town remains a vital socioeconomic link between Mozambique and Africa's most robust economy.
