Pilgrim's Rest (South Africa)

Weather…

Pilgrim's Rest is a historic gold-mining town in the Mpumalanga province that operates as a living museum and is protected as a National Monument. The town was established in 1873 following the discovery of alluvial gold by Alec 'Wheelbarrow' Patterson in a nearby creek, sparking South Africa's second major gold rush. Over the following decades, the settlement grew into a prosperous hub, drawing thousands of prospectors from across the globe. A notable historical curiosity is the Royal Hotel, dating back to 1894, whose bar was originally a prefabricated chapel from Lourenço Marques. Unlike many other boomtowns, Pilgrim's Rest was never abandoned, allowing its Victorian-era architecture to remain remarkably well-preserved. In 1986, the entire town was declared a National Monument to safeguard its unique cultural and architectural heritage. Today, tourists can explore restored homes, vintage shops, and the old printing works, all of which evoke the atmosphere of the late 19th century. Surrounded by the scenic beauty of the Panorama Route, it serves as a fascinating window into the pioneering spirit and the mining legacy that transformed South Africa.
