The Volkswagen plant in Kariega, formerly known as Uitenhage, is the largest automotive manufacturing facility on the African continent and the heart of South Africa's vehicle industry. Operations began here as early as 1951, and since then, the plant has produced more than four million vehicles. Today, Kariega serves as the exclusive production site for the VW Polo and Polo Vivo models, which are manufactured for both the local market and global export. The facility has its own press shop, body shop, paint shop, and engine assembly unit, ensuring a high level of integrated manufacturing. Following the city's renaming to Kariega in 2021, the plant also updated its name to reflect the new regional identity. The plant site is an active industrial complex, usually not open to the public. From the nearby N2 highway you can see the large factory halls and the test track.
Where to view it
The best viewpoint is the N2 bridge over the plant site, from where you have a good overview of the production halls. The hills near the town of Kariega also offer a higher perspective on the entire area.
