Owl House (South Africa)

Weather…

The Owl House is a unique and haunting art environment created by Helen Martins in the remote village of Nieu-Bethesda. Following the death of her parents, Martins began transforming her home and garden into a visionary world of glass and concrete sculptures. Between 1945 and 1976, she and local workmen, most notably Koos Malgas, created hundreds of figures including owls, camels, and pilgrims. The interior of the house is decorated with crushed glass of various colors, which Martins used to capture and reflect light in the dim rooms. The site, known as the "Camel Yard," reflects her deep obsession with themes of light, spirituality, and distant lands. After her death, the Owl House was preserved as a museum and was later declared a National Heritage Site. It has since become a world-renowned example of "outsider art," attracting visitors who are moved by its eccentric beauty and the story of its creator's isolation.
