Suurberg Mountains (South Africa)

Weather…

The Suurberg Mountains form a rugged range at the eastern end of the Cape Fold Belt in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. This mountain system creates a distinct transition between the coastal plains and the interior Karoo basin, with elevations ranging from 250 to 970 meters. Geologically, the range is dominated by the hard quartzites of the Witteberg Group, which were folded and faulted during the formation of the Cape mountains millions of years ago. The area is highly significant for its biodiversity, as it serves as a meeting point for five different South African biomes, including fynbos and subtropical thicket. Notable endemic flora includes the Suurberg Cycad and the Suurberg Rabbits Ear, which are found nowhere else on Earth. Human history is recorded in the Melkhoutboom Cave, where artifacts dating back 15,000 years have been discovered. The Suurberg Pass, completed in 1853, once served as the primary link between the coast and the northern interior, adding a layer of colonial engineering history to the landscape.
