Port Elizabeth City Hall (South Africa)

Weather…

The Port Elizabeth City Hall, situated on Market Square in the city now known as Gqeberha, is a masterpiece of Victorian colonial architecture. Its construction began in 1858 and reached completion in 1862, serving as a multifunctional hub for administrative services and community gatherings. The iconic clock tower, which defines the building's silhouette, was commissioned in 1883 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Queen Victoria's reign. Disaster struck in 1977 when a massive fire gutted the building's interior, but fortunately, the resilient stone facade and exterior walls survived the heat. A comprehensive restoration project followed, meticulously returning the City Hall to its former glory while modernizing its internal facilities for continued municipal use. It currently functions as the executive seat for the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality. As a declared national monument, the City Hall stands as a testament to the city's endurance and its significant role as a major port and industrial center in the Eastern Cape province.
