Kariega, historically known as Uitenhage, is a major industrial city in the Eastern Cape province and part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality. Founded in 1804 on the banks of the Swartkops River, it was initially an administrative outpost before transforming into the "Detroit of South Africa" during the 20th century. The town is most famous for housing the massive Volkswagen manufacturing plant, which is the largest automotive factory on the African continent and a cornerstone of the regional economy. Beyond its industrial prowess, Kariega has significant historical landmarks, including the Cuyler Manor Museum and the old railway station, which reflect its diverse heritage. In 2021, the town was officially renamed Kariega to honor the river and the indigenous history of the area. It is surrounded by fertile valleys and is close to the Groendal Wilderness Area, offering a blend of heavy industry and scenic natural landscapes.
