Gqeberha, known as Port Elizabeth until 2021, is a major port city on Algoa Bay in the Eastern Cape province. Founded in 1820 by British settlers, it rapidly evolved into an industrial hub, particularly for automotive manufacturing. Often called the Detroit of South Africa, the city hosts significant production plants for Volkswagen and Ford, which underpin the local economy. The current name, Gqeberha, is derived from the Xhosa language and refers to the Baakens River that flows through the urban area.
