Gqeberha, known as Port Elizabeth until 2021, is a major port city on Algoa Bay in the Eastern Cape province. Founded in 1820 by British settlers, it rapidly evolved into an industrial hub, particularly for automotive manufacturing. Often called the Detroit of South Africa, the city hosts significant production plants for Volkswagen and Ford, which underpin the local economy. The current name, Gqeberha, is derived from the Xhosa language and refers to the Baakens River that flows through the urban area. The city is part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and serves as a gateway to the famous Garden Route and the Addo Elephant National Park. With its extensive beaches and subtropical climate, it is also a vital center for water sports and national tourism.
