Mountain Zebra National Park (South Africa)

Weather…

Mountain Zebra National Park was established in 1937 specifically to save the Cape mountain zebra from extinction, at a time when only a handful of individuals remained in the region. Located near Cradock in the Eastern Cape province, the park now encompasses approximately 284 square kilometers within the rugged Bankberg Mountains. The landscape is characterized by dramatic ridges, deep ravines, and rolling plains, providing a panoramic backdrop for wildlife viewing. Through rigorous conservation efforts, the mountain zebra population has flourished, and the park is now home to hundreds of these uniquely striped animals. In addition to the zebras, the reserve provides a sanctuary for Cape buffalo, black rhino, cheetahs, and lions, which were successfully reintroduced to restore ecological balance. The vegetation consists of a mix of highland grasslands and Karoo shrubs, perfectly adapted to the semi-arid climate. Visitors can explore the park via self-drive routes or on foot via trails like the Idwala Hiking Trail. The park is also renowned for its rich birdlife, including the endangered blue crane and the jackal buzzard. Its elevated position gives crisp air and spectacular vistas over the endless expanses of the Great Karoo interior.
