Barawa Ancient City (Somalia)

Weather…

Barawa, also known as Brava, is a historic trade city on the southern coast of Somalia, renowned as a multicultural melting pot. Founded in the 9th century, it evolved into a prominent city-state within the Benadir confederation. Barawa is unique for its Bravanese population, who speak a distinct dialect of Swahili and maintain deep historical ties to the Indian Ocean trade network. The architecture features multi-story coral stone houses and elaborately carved wooden doors. In 1506, the city was assaulted by the Portuguese fleet under Tristão da Cunha, yet it managed to sustain its economic vitality. For centuries, Barawa served as a center for Islamic scholarship and high-quality craftsmanship, particularly in textiles and leather goods. Today, the city stands as a testament to a rich, multicultural history that fuses influences from Arabia, Persia, and East Africa.
