Barawe, also known as Brava, is a historic port city located in the Lower Shabelle region along the Indian Ocean coast. The city is renowned for its unique multicultural heritage and its distinct ethnic group, the Bravanese, who maintain their own language (Chimwiini) and specific cultural traditions. Barawe was a major administrative and commercial hub during the medieval Ajuran Empire and later flourished as a trading post under Omani and Italian influence. The architecture of the old town is characterized by narrow alleys and intricately decorated stone houses, bearing a strong resemblance to the Swahili coastal towns of East Africa. Geographically, Barawe is flanked by white sand dunes and coral reefs, making fishing the primary source of livelihood for its residents. Historically, the city was also a center for craftsmanship, particularly in textile weaving and high-quality leatherwork. Recently, Barawe was designated as the capital of the South West State of Somalia, highlighting its growing political stature. The city remains a lively symbol of cultural diversity and maritime legacy in the region.
