Afgooye is a strategically located city in the Lower Shabelle region, situated about 30 kilometers west of Mogadishu. It lies directly on the Shabelle River, making it one of the most fertile and agriculturally productive centers in Somalia. Historically, Afgooye was a significant part of the Ajuran Empire and later served as the seat of the Geledi Sultanate, which wielded considerable power in the 18th and 19th centuries. The city is internationally famous for the 'Istunka' festival, a traditional mock combat tournament held annually to mark the onset of the harvest season. Geographically, Afgooye thrives on river-based irrigation, supporting large-scale plantations of bananas, papayas, maize, and citrus fruits. As a major transportation junction, the city connects the capital to the southwestern provinces. Despite its proximity to Mogadishu, Afgooye has maintained its distinct agricultural identity and its role as the region's 'breadbasket.' The economy is predominantly driven by farming and the trade of agricultural commodities, serving as a vital supply hub for the capital's food markets.
