Lata is the provincial capital of Temotu, the easternmost province of the Solomon Islands, situated on the island of Nendo (Santa Cruz). Due to its extreme geographic isolation, the town serves as the vital gateway and administrative hub for the remote outer islands, including the Reef and Duff groups. Lata is equipped with a small domestic airstrip and basic wharf facilities, providing the only regular transportation links to the distant national capital, Honiara. The region holds significant historical weight as the site of a failed Spanish colonization attempt led by Álvaro de Mendaña in 1595, where he eventually died. The town itself is small, housing provincial government offices, a hospital, and a police station that cater to the sparse population of the Santa Cruz Islands. In 2013, Lata was significantly impacted by a major earthquake and subsequent tsunami, highlighting the environmental challenges faced by this low-lying coastal community. The local economy is driven by subsistence fishing, agriculture, and the production of copra. It remains a center for preserving unique cultural practices, such as the manufacture of traditional feather money, which is exclusive to the Temotu region.
