Morské oko Lake (Slovakia)

Weather…

Morské oko Lake, translating to "Sea Eye," is the largest volcanic lake in Slovakia with an area of nearly 14 hectares and serves as a central feature of the Vihorlat Protected Landscape Area in the far east of the country. This impressive body of water was formed at the end of the Tertiary period by a massive landslide that blocked the valley of the Okna stream, creating a natural basin. The lake is situated at an elevation of 618 meters above sea level and reaches a remarkable depth of 25 meters at its deepest point. Surrounded by dense, ancient beech forests, parts of which are included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, the lake provides a habitat for numerous rare fish and amphibian species. The clear, deep blue water reflects the surrounding volcanic mountain peaks, making the site one of the most photogenic natural destinations in the region. Swimming and fishing are strictly prohibited throughout the entire nature reserve to ensure the long-term protection of this highly sensitive and largely pristine ecosystem.
