Basilica of St. James (Slovakia)

Weather…

The Basilica of St. James in Levoča is one of the most significant Gothic sacral buildings in Central Europe and the spiritual heart of the Spiš region. Built primarily in the 14th century, this monumental church houses a world-class artistic treasure: the main altar of St. James, which stands at 18.62 meters, making it the tallest late Gothic wooden altar in the world. This masterpiece was carved from linden wood by Master Paul of Levoča between 1507 and 1517 and was constructed entirely without metal nails. Beyond the main altar, the basilica features an incredible collection of 12 additional side altars, rare 14th-century frescoes, and ornate Renaissance pews. The church is architecturally defined by massive pillars and elegant vaulted ceilings that create a solemn and majestic atmosphere. In 2009, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with the historic center of Levoča, attracting visitors from all over the world.
