Kikinda Oil Fields (Serbia)

Weather…

The oil fields of Kikinda in the northern Banat region form the center of terrestrial hydrocarbon production in Serbia. Systematic exploration and extraction began in the 1950s after geologists were able to prove significant deposits of oil and natural gas in the Pannonian Basin. The city of Kikinda subsequently developed into the administrative center for the operations of NIS (Naftna Industrija Srbije), with the fields in the surrounding area being among the most productive in the country. Although production volumes are small in a global comparison, they make an essential contribution to meeting the national energy demand and stabilizing the local economy. The landscape is dotted with numerous pumpjacks, so-called "horse heads," which extract crude oil from depths of up to 2,000 meters amidst fertile farmlands. In recent years, modern methods such as hydraulic stimulation have been used to extend the life of the fields and utilize residual deposits more efficiently. Besides oil, high-quality natural gas is also extracted in the region, which is partially processed on-site or fed into the national distribution network.
