Djoudj National Bird Park, located in the Senegal River delta, is the third most important bird sanctuary in the world. This UNESCO World Heritage site provides a vital wetland habitat for over three million migratory birds that cross the Sahara Desert each year to over-winter in Africa. The park's vast network of lakes, creeks, and marshes creates an oasis of biodiversity in the semi-arid Sahel region, making it an essential destination for birdwatchers and nature lovers. The most spectacular highlight of the park is a boat excursion to the massive pelican breeding colony. Watching thousands of pelicans nesting and taking flight together is a profound sensory experience. In addition to pelicans, the park hosts large numbers of flamingos, herons, spoonbills, and various species of ducks and cormorants. The wetlands are also home to crocodiles, warthogs, and pythons, which can often be spotted along the banks. The sheer concentration of life in such a serene environment is truly awe-inspiring. The park is only open to the public during the northern winter months, from November to April, coinciding with the birds' residency. It is easily accessible from the historic city of Saint-Louis, which is about an hour's drive away. Early morning is the best time for sightings, as the birds are most active and the lighting is excellent for photography. A guided boat trip is necessary to navigate the sanctuary safely and to reach the most populous bird sites deep within the delta.
